"Ends." ― Description of XLVI

Textchurch

The rectangle of text featured in the church, translates to "YOU HAVE FOUND THE STAR."

XLVI is a mostly monochromatic game, mainly consisting of the colour grey, that encompasses a variety of religious themes and symbolism. The story includes a line of importance known as the Mortes, seven saints associated with them and a mysterious person known as Zhoulj who is considered to be “All”.

Overview[]

XLVI is said to be a visual representation of what PallidumMorte sees. Core elements of the story of PallidumMorte and his group are shown within the game, mostly encoded. Through decryption, users can find out about the line of Mortes (specifically Morte XLV and Morte XLVI), the seven Sancti and a person known as Zhoulj who likely oversees them all. Players are also introduced to two symbols which are only known by the names of PallidumMorte’s groups, Aeternus and Cruciatus or “Eternal” and “Torture”.

The game’s gameplay mostly revolves around decryption and invisible teleports. The game uses some fairly unique codes making it fairly difficult to decrypt them with one code being custom made by PallidumMorte himself. The invisible teleports are decently difficult to find as well as the maps are very large and spacious.

Walkthrough[]

Upon spawning, the player will find themselves in a dome-shaped temple held up with eight pillars on a hemispherical island with ten surrounding broken columns. Bridging off from the first island is a second, larger island of the same shape. It houses an Angel in the center of it. Falling into it leads to a new game featuring a church with a rectangle of text farther into the place. The badge, "Requiem," is supposed to be rewarded on entry but isn't due to a scripting bug. Using the symbol posted by the owners twitter, it translates to, "YOU HAVE FOUND THE STAR."

“Forgotten over time” dice code

On the pillar closest to the bridge, the player can find a black rose in front of it and what appears to be dice on the pillar itself. This is dice code. The player will have to use shift lock to look inside the pillar though as some of the circles on the dice are placed behind the shapes themselves. Upon decryption, this should say “Morte XLV”. If the player zooms out from here and looks at the ridge between the dome and the pillars, they should see more dice code, spanning to the next two pillars. Upon decryption, this says “Forgotten over time”. If the player walks over to the island with the Angel as its centerpiece and looks below where it stands, they will notice a hole with a symbol in it. This symbol represents the group “Cruciatus" that PallidumMorte is in.

Going back to the first island, from the end of the bridge, the player should turn to their right and approach the first column with an adjacent smaller piece of column nearby. They must walk through the middle of these and they will be teleported to their next island. Note that this teleporter can be slightly buggy if there are multiple people in a server. There is an additional code that can be found on the first island. It can be found on the underside of the dome, inside the temple. Usually, it is completely covered in darkness but is viewable by either looking up quickly when joining or by teleporting to and back from the second island. It’s known to be PallidumMorte’s custom language and is presumed to say something along the lines of “JOB 19 19”. This is a proverb from one of the books of the bible. Its relation to XLVI is unknown as of now.

The next island the player will find themselves on has the symbol representing the group “Aeternus”, that PallidumMorte is also in, directly in the centre of it. The island is made up of lowering rings that act similarly to contour lines found on a map. Surrounding the island, the player can see seven cloaked statues, which are the Sancti that can be found in both of PallidumMorte’s groups. If the player zooms out, they may notice protruding lines coming from one side of the island. Upon closer inspection, the player will find that each line contains two letters between them. The letters spell out: “GZ RS AV LK NI GS FR RG XN BZ VU VO GZ ES HA UN UC FG VT GO”. This is a digraph cipher. Using the grid provided by a site called The Black Chamber, this cipher is revealed to say “The only way to speak to him is through the saints”.

In relation with the seven surrounding statues, there are seven invisible bridges that the player can use to reach each statue. Each statue has a roman numeral in them and an auditory Morse code is emitted from each, signifying an order to the Morse. Upon decoding the Morse code, the conversation that follows should look like this:

I - “The organization is in better hands ever since the execution”
II - “Agreed”
III - “Never understood why he took being an apprentice while having the rank of a morte”
IV - “He was weak”
V - “I never see what XLV saw in that person”
VI - “XLVI has given Zhoulj hope for the future”
VII - “Well said Ira”

To progress past the second island, the player must go behind the island with the number “IV” written in front of it. There, they should stumble across an invisible teleporter around the centre of the back. With this, they’ll be teleported to the third island. The third island is fairly different from the other two, this time being a mostly brown colour. The player will find themselves teleporting onto a very slightly modified version of the symbol found in the game icon. A line separates the two symbols the player has previously found that is within the larger symbol. Four smaller islands adjoin the central island, connected with stone staircases. Each of these four islands has two pillars and what is presumed to be a large door with an oval-shaped ring on the front of them. Each ring has a dot within it and the position of this dot is different on each door. The dots on each door can be linked to form a triangle, solving part of the code. What to do after this is unknown, however.

To get to the next island, the player should go to the door where the dot is nearest to the centre of the oval. They then need to go behind this door and walk off the ledge behind it. There will be an invisible path waiting for them. They must walk to the end of this path until they fall ever so slightly onto a lower part of the path. This is the teleport.

The fourth island, simply called “???”,  is different from the rest as it is the first to be separated by a place teleport. The island itself has four archways to the north, south, east, and west of the island. The floor seems to be made up of an amalgamation of doors and archways and there is a large ring serving as the edge of the island. It is also closed off entirely by a large, circular wall surrounding the island from the outside space. There are also six angel statues above spawn that rotate continuously and are rotated as to point towards a centre point between them all. There is one known puzzle here and it is under the island. Jumping off and looking up will let the player see some PallidumMorte speech. This translates to “PROVERBS” and goes hand in hand with a tweet Pallidum made on the same day the island was created.

To get to the next island, the player must go to the left of their spawn, through the archway, and jump off the side of the island. They’ll end up on an invisible platform and will be promptly teleported to another place. The next place, called “You Don’t Belong Here” is not an island, but rather a dark tunnel made of stone. The end of the tunnel that the player spawns in has a marble and pebble textured door at the end of it. The wall is climbable so the player can access the top of the door. Walking down to the other end of the tunnel, the player can find a large ring of fire that emits a buzzing noise. Small dots of fire are also seen lighting the way from the door to the ring.

The buzzing noise emitted by the ring of fire is actually a steganographic image. Using steganography tools, an image is produced of a door and a wall of barely readable text. Some of the text can be read by modifying the image and it is assumed to say “Meet your maker for I am God. Wails of cries hum from the halls, the soulless kneel down at their feet and weep, forever in flames.” There is a sixth place called “Cruciatus”, and evidently there have been some people who were able to access it since Cruciatus is associated with a badge that a handful of people have received. However, it is unknown how to get here as of now. The final island seems to not be finished or have a script to go to it. It seems to only be accessible by cheating as looks unfinished, a picture of it is in the gallery.

History[]

XLVI was created on the 21st of January, 2017, the same date as PallidumMorte made his account. Sometime around the 28th of March, 2021, the game’s name was changed from Consciousness to XLVI. This is due to the game moving on to “chapter three”. It’s also said that this date is when XLVI had a revamp with new sections to existing islands, new lighting, etc.

On the 18th of April, 2022, Island #4 is created and put into the game. This version of it is stored on a separate account named “RmF2b3JpdGVz” which is “Favorites” in base64. On the 20th of April, Pallidum added another place into the game, this time being “You Don’t Belong Here”. A day later on the 21st of April, Pallidum added badges for each island and place reached. A day later again, he added another seven badges, totaling up to twelve, assumedly for each future place.

On the 25th of April, Pallidum made four more badges and then deleted them along with almost every new badge from the 21st. The only one that survived the purge were the original five badges and Cruciatus.

Trivia[]

  • The name “PallidumMorte” means Pale Death
  • XLVI is the roman numeral for the number 46
  • The teleporters can be buggy and in rare cases, a player can get their leg welded to the teleport.
  • The number of islands that are known to exist is an argued amount with some saying five and others going as far as 20+.
  • Due to many unsolved aspects of the game, XLVI has gained notoriety as a very difficult puzzle myth.

Theories[]

  • The code found on the underside of the dome leads to a new island.
    • During PallidumMorte’s interrogation, he states that the Angel statue is a pointer for new islands. The torch points upwards and the code can be found by looking upwards.
    • The code has some currently unknown characters which could be the key to finding another island.
  • The Angel statue is a statue of Uriel
    • Depictions of Uriel tend to hold many different types of objects, including fire which has a slight resemblance to the torch.
  • The oval rings on the 3rd island involve using the world map.
    • Both the world map and the oval rings are oval shapes
    • It can be seen on his Twitter that Pallidum has attempted to use maps for codes before.
  • The steganography image with the door is Zhoulj speaking
    • To use the phrase “I am God” could only be used by a being of high status, that being being Zhoulj
    • Every other character introduced is part of some line or group whereas Zhoulj is a single entity.
